Teeth Whitening

A bright, healthy smile can increase your confidence and boost your overall sense of well-being. Teeth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic dental treatment that lightens the shade of your natural teeth and enhances your smile. At Sikora Family Dentistry, we offer custom-crafted professional-grade whitening trays that you can use in the comfort of your home.

How Does Customized Take-Home Teeth Whitening Work?

As you age, teeth naturally tend to change color and can become stained by red wine, coffee, tea, or tobacco use. Certain medications and trauma can also discolor teeth. A professional-grade take-home whitening system can dramatically brighten your teeth and help you feel good about your smile again.

To begin the process, we take precise impressions of your teeth and create clear, custom-made plastic trays that are designed for a snug, perfect fit. At your next visit, you try in the trays to make sure they fit properly, and any necessary adjustments are made.

At home, you fill these custom-made trays with a professional-grade whitening gel and wear them once a day for 30 minutes for approximately 2 weeks. The gel comes in pre-measured syringes and is easy to apply, so you don’t have to worry about how much to use or deal with messy application.

Does Whitening Make Teeth Sensitive?

Your teeth may become sensitive during this time, but sensitivity will subside shortly after you have stopped whitening your teeth. Using toothpaste made for sensitive teeth before and during take-home whitening treatment can help ease discomfort.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

With proper oral care, professional teeth whitening can keep your teeth looking vibrant for more than a year. If you smoke or drink a lot of coffee, tea, or wine, whiteness can fade sooner, and you may need to touch up your teeth more often.

Visiting your dentist and hygienist for regular dental cleanings can also help you maintain a beautiful smile and make the effects of teeth whitening last longer. A good oral hygiene routine that includes daily flossing, twice-daily brushing, and using whitening toothpaste and mouth rinses can also help combat staining. Touch-up kits are available for purchase at our office.

Is Teeth Whitening For You?

Patients with healthy teeth and gums are generally good candidates for teeth whitening. You should not attempt teeth whitening if:

Tooth-colored crowns, veneers, bonding, and white fillings do not whiten with bleaching treatment. The placement of any new dental restorations should always be completed before whitening your teeth.
