Dental Cleaning - North Olmsted, OH - Sikora Family Dentistry

Many people underestimate the need to have their teeth cleaned regularly. No matter how long it’s been since your last teeth cleaning, Sikora Family Dentistry offers professional dental services to help patients of all ages get on track to good oral health.

The Importance of Regular Teeth Cleanings

Even if you brush and floss your teeth twice a day, it’s hard to avoid the buildup of plaque and tartar on teeth over time. This buildup sets the stage for bacteria to thrive in the mouth, and this can lead to cavities, gum disease, and other serious problems. A professional dental cleaning reduces the risk of tooth decay and other serious problems.

The Cleaning Process

Whether due to negative experiences as a child or fear of the unfamiliar, many people avoid having their teeth cleaned professionally. We understand that some of our patients are uncomfortable with visiting a dental office, but we believe that educating and familiarizing patients with the cleaning process can help ease some of that anxiety.

During your appointment, the dentist will use specialized instruments to remove the plaque and tartar that’s built up on your teeth. First, we use an ultrasonic instrument to loosen and remove the largest segments of plaque or tartar, then wash it away with a gentle mist of water. We then use finer hand tools to scrape off any remaining plaque before polishing the teeth. Cleanings are painless procedures, and many people even enjoy them because of the way their teeth feel afterward.

Preventing Tooth Decay

We follow the American Dental Association’s recommendation that our patients should have their teeth examined and cleaned at least yearly, but patients who smoke or have a history of certain medical problems or periodontal disease will need to have their teeth cleaned more often. The dentist will be able to make a personalized recommendation for you based on your specific situation.
