North Olmsted Gum Treatment

woman at dentist office

When bacterial plaque forms at the gumline and is left for long periods, it can cause inflammation and gum disease. At Sikora Family Dentistry, we provide a variety of gum treatment options to protect your mouth and teeth and to help eliminate gum disease.

Scaling And Root Planning

Scaling and root planning is a nonsurgical approach to gum disease. Our deep-cleaning procedure removes plaque and deposits from the tooth's surface from above and below the gumline. With this procedure, we also smooth the tooth-root surfaces, which makes it more difficult for bacteria to stick to them.

Antibiotics

When gum disease advances, it can cause periodontal pockets that can be hard for our trained professionals to reach with traditional cleaning techniques. In this case, we may recommend a prescription antimicrobial rinse or a topical antibiotic that is applied to specific areas on the gums. We recommend this method as a short-term treatment to prevent the elimination of good bacteria.

Oral Hygiene

Lack of oral hygiene is the main cause of gum disease, so it’s essential you take care of your teeth daily, even after treatment, to prevent further incidents. We can show you the most effective brushing techniques and flossing methods and give you recommendations on some of the top products to use at home. This, along with regular appointments in our office, can help keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevent tooth decay.

Diagnosing Gum Disease

We use several methods to diagnose your gum disease and determine how severe it is. We will go over your medical history and see if there are any factors that could cause gum disease, including medications and smoking. Our dentist will examine your mouth and look for plaque and tartar buildup. He will also measure the groove between your gums and teeth by using a dental probe. Finally, we may also take X-rays to check for bone loss and loose teeth to determine what type of gum treatment is needed.
