Dental bridges

Missing teeth can be caused by advanced gum disease, decay, trauma or injury, and can have a negative impact on your oral health and overall well-being. At Sikora Family Dentistry, our cosmetic dentists offer several different options for tooth replacement that can restore your smile and help you get back on the path to optimal oral health.

What Is A Dental Bridge?

True to its name, a dental bridge consists of a prosthetic tooth and crowns that attach to the adjoining teeth on each side of the gap where any teeth are missing. There are several different types of bridges. Our cosmetic dentists will examine your teeth and determine which type of bridge will best fit your needs.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Patients who suffer from missing teeth often have difficulty eating, speaking and are self-conscious about smiling. A bridge can help to fix all of these issues. Bridges can:

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge. The prosthetic tooth that fits in the space where your tooth used to be is called a pontic, which is attached to a crown on either side. These crowns are cemented to the adjoining teeth to keep the bridge in place. Cementing the crowns involves taking away tooth structure of healthy teeth, so it's important to consider alternative options such as dental implants, which can be placed without affecting any other teeth.

Cantilever bridges may be placed when there are teeth on only one side of the tooth that is missing. These types of bridges are not as stable as traditional bridges or implants and are not recommended in the back area of the mouth.

Maryland bridges are typically composed of special resin materials that are cemented to the adjoining teeth, but do not require as much alteration to the adjoining teeth.
