Dental Bridge

What is a bridge?

Dental Bridge - North Olmsted, OH - Sikora Family Dentistry

A bridge is a replacement tooth or teeth that fill the gap where a tooth is missing. When you lose a tooth, nearby teeth may move or shift into the empty space, which can impact your bite and put additional stress on your teeth and jaw. Teeth that have moved are also harder to clean, which increases the risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease. A missing tooth can also cause bone to shrink and change how the jawbone supports the lips and cheeks. This can make you look older. A bridge can restore your bite and help keep the natural shape of your face.

Traditional dental bridges are attached to the natural teeth or implants adjacent to the empty space where the tooth used to be. A bridge consists of two or more crowns on the teeth adjacent to the gap, which anchor the prosthetic tooth to these adjacent teeth.

There are several different types of bridges. Dr. Sikora will perform a thorough examination of your mouth and teeth and determine which type of dental bridge will best fit your needs. We will create a personalized treatment plan that can improve your smile and help you achieve optimal dental health and wellness.

Dental Bridge Procedure

Dental bridge procedures require multiple appointments. First, Dr. Sikora will choose a shade for the dental bridge that matches the color of your natural teeth. We will then prepare the teeth on both sides of the gap where the bridge will be attached.

Once teeth are prepared, impressions of your teeth will be taken to provide an exact mold of the bridge, which is sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be crafted by a technician. We will place a temporary bridge to protect prepared adjacent teeth while you are waiting for the permanent bridge.

When the permanent bridge is ready, we will fit and adjust it. Finally, the bridge will be cemented to the adjacent teeth. Good oral hygiene is a must when it comes to making your bridge last. A bridge can become loose if teeth or bone are damaged by dental disease. Regular preventative care can increase the longevity of your new bridge.
