Dental Sealants in North Olmsted, OH

Preventing tooth decay

Preventing decay and other dental problems can help to ensure your smile stays bright and healthy. At Sikora Family Dentistry, our cosmetic dentists not only provide services that can enhance your smile, our they also provide top-notch preventative care for children of all ages.

What Are Sealants?

Although a good oral hygiene routine removes bacteria and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, brushing and flossing doesn’t always remove debris from the depressions and grooves in back teeth. A dental sealant is a thin protective coating that is usually painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth -- typically the premolars and molars. Sealants quickly bond to teeth and protect the enamel and nooks and crannies where bacteria and plaque can hide.

Who Is A Candidate for Sealants?

Sealants are usually done on children’s and teenagers’ back teeth. Adults with no decay in their molars also may be candidates for sealants. Our dentists will thoroughly examine your teeth and determine whether sealants are right for you.

To ensure that teeth are protected, children typically get sealants on their permanent premolars and molars shortly after they erupt. Ages 6-14 are prime years for cavities to develop, and sealants will shield the teeth from decay. Dental sealants are used on primary teeth if the child’s baby teeth have very deep grooves or depressions. Baby teeth are essential to hold the correct positioning for permanent teeth and sealants can help your child avoid losing teeth too early or having to endure dental procedures at a very young age.

How Are Sealants Applied?

The procedure that is used to apply sealants involves a quick and comfortable process. Your hygienist will first thoroughly clean the teeth. Teeth are then rinsed and dried.

The sealants are then painted on the teeth, creating a hardened barrier that will keep out bacteria and plaque. Our dentists or hygienists can replace sealants if they become damaged or worn.
