At Sikora Family Dentistry, we offer a variety of exceptional dental services and procedures that can repair damaged teeth and improve your oral health.

What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a natural-looking porcelain “cap” that completely covers a tooth to protect it and improve its shape, size and appearance. Porcelain or ceramic crowns are matched to the color of your natural teeth, and may include other materials underneath such as metal alloys, zirconia or acrylic. Certain types of crowns also may be made of gold, acrylic or stainless steel.

Why Would I Need A Dental Crown?

Ceramic crowns are an effective way to repair and enhance teeth, and can be used to:

The Dental Crown Procedure

Dental crowns usually require two dental visits. At the first appointment, we will examine the tooth and take x-rays to check the roots of the tooth and surrounding bone. If a tooth is infected, has severe decay or if there is a risk of injury to the tooth's pulp, root canal therapy may be required before the crown is placed.

To prepare your tooth for the crown, the dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic. Any decay will be removed and the tooth will be shaped and prepared. Impressions of your tooth will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where skilled, highly-trained technicians will create a lifelike crown that fits precisely over your tooth. A temporary crown will be placed to ensure your tooth is protected until the permanent crown returns from the lab.

In 2-3 weeks you will return to our office to have your new crown permanently cemented. Your dentist will check the crown's color and fit and make any necessary adjustments. If all is well, your crown will be permanently cemented into place.
