This dental disorder could be the surprise source of headaches, neck pain

First, it’s facial discomfort and soreness, often noticed in the afternoon, and maybe experiencing an odd clicking noise when eating.

Next, it’s persistent headaches or unexplained radiating pain in the neck and shoulder.

People think they’ve slept wrong, are overly tired or spent too much time hunched over a screen.

But Dr. Bill Sikora says the symptoms are often directly tied to the body’s most complex joint – the jaw – and an affliction that’s also a mouthful: Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, more commonly known as TMD and TMJ.

Learn dentistry's most important advancement in the last 50 years

It's without a hint of hyperbole that Dr. Bill Sikora calls dental implants the most significant breakthrough in recent dental history for replacing lost and missing teeth.

"This is a quality of life issue solved because before dental implants there was nothing as comfortable or more like a real tooth that let patients go back to how they felt before the loss," said Sikora, a dentist who has owned and operated Sikora Family Dentistry for more than 30 years in North Olmsted.

"Think about a generation of people who had no good solution to their mouth discomfort and the limitations that missing teeth cause. Dental implants are a game-changer because we can replace teeth like we've never been able to do before."

Implants are necessary when patients lose teeth for any reason, said Sikora, noting the loss could be from decay, periodontal disease, trauma or infection.

The relationship between sleep apnea, snoring and how your dentist can help

Sleep apnea – a serious sleeping disorder that interrupts regular breathing while slumbering – and chronic snoring affects about 30 million people in the U.S. and can cause significant health issues, but a growing number of patients are finding success beating the problem with the help of their dentist.

Research shows that oral appliance therapy, essentially a device that fits like a sports mouthguard or an orthodontic retainer, is an effective treatment option for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Dentists pioneered the treatment therapy and work hand-in-hand with patients' primary doctors to diagnose and treat the disorder, which occurs when muscles relax during sleep, allowing soft tissue to collapse and block the airway. As a result, repeated breathing pauses occur and are followed by brief awakenings that disturb sleep.

Advice on tooth decay prevention

Sugary drinks. More bottled water. Fewer people eating healthy diets. Teens mistakenly believing vaping is healthier than smoking.

All of this consumption and more is conspiring to keep the rate of tooth decay – the most common chronic childhood condition – at about 50 percent for those between the ages of 2 and 19.

Left untreated, there are a lifetime of consequences, according to Dr. Bill Sikora, a dentist who has owned and operated Sikora Family Dentistry for more than 30 years in North Olmsted.

There is, however, good news, Sikora said. Tooth decay is 100 percent preventable, and it's important to get and stay ahead of the bacteria that can damage teeth and negatively impact the overall health of children.

"There's no replacement for good oral hygiene and periodic checkups," Sikora said. "There is a lot that you can do to make sure your children, whatever age they are, have good habits that lead to dental health."
