Wisdom Teeth Removal in North Olmsted, OH

Wisdom teeth are the hindmost set of molars that grow on each side of the upper and lower jaws. They are the last set of teeth to emerge, and typically come in the late teen years or in your early twenties. For some patients, wisdom teeth pose no health problems or risks, but many other patients will need to have them removed, and at Sikora Family Dentistry, we can and will recommend an oral surgeon in the area for you if upon checking for wisdom teeth, we see that wisdom teeth removal is needed.

Why Wisdom Teeth Removal Is Necessary

Wisdom teeth removal may be necessary for you if your jaw is too small to allow room for them. Oftentimes, wisdom teeth crowd out the other teeth and push them out of alignment, which can cause problems, pain, and a crooked smile. Additionally, wisdom teeth sometimes grow in at an angle, which can cause damage to nearby molars as the push up against them. Wisdom teeth can also create sinus pressure and pain and cause damage to the jaw area.

The Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

If it is determined that you are a candidate for wisdom teeth removal, local or general anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort during the removal process. The recovery period for wisdom teeth removal lasts for a few days. You may use over-the-counter painkillers for any discomfort, and apply an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes periodically to reduce swelling in the first 24 hours after surgery. You will want to eat soft foods at first, such as soups, pudding, and gelatin, and gradually add in solid foods as your healing progresses. Avoid exercise during the recovery period as it may increase bleeding.
